SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Junior forward Sarah Arsenault
(Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy)and freshman midfielder
Meghan McGrath (Vernon, NJ/Vernon HS)each scored
three goals in two games over the weekend to lead the Slippery Rock
University women’s soccer team to a pair of season-opening
wins.
McGrath and Arsenault each scored a pair of goals in The
Rock’s 4-2 win over Molloy (N.Y.) on Sunday after having a
goal each in SRU’s 4-2 win Friday at Bridgeport (Conn.).
Sophomore midfielder Nici Spamer (McMurray/Peters Township
HS) scored one goal and had one assists vs. Bridgeport and
added a pair of assists at Molloy. Junior midfielder Jessica
Markowski (North Royalton, OH/Padua Franciscan HS) also
had two assists vs. Molloy.
Freshman forward Lauren Steele (Leonardtown, MD/Leonardtown
HS) scored her first collegiate goal in The Rock’s
win over Bridgeport.
Sophomore midfielder Jocelyn Illig (Ebensburg/Central Cambria
HS) and sophomore defender Cheryl Wickerham
(Morgantown, PA/Twin Valley HS) each had an assist in
the win at Bridgeport.
Sophomore goalie Amanda Wier (Bethlehem/Fairfield [CT.
HS) allowed all four opponent goals, but recorded two saves
in a full, 90-minute game effort vs. Bridgeport and three in 58
minutes vs. Molloy. Freshman goalie Vanessa Gogates
(Lansdale/Methacton HS) had two saves in 32 minutes of
action against Molloy.
The Rock women return to action Wednesday, when they will host
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Mansfield in a 4 p.m.
game on James Egli Field.
